If you've been reading up on curly cuts, you've seen both names. Both are dry cuts made for curls, but they go about it differently, and neither one is right for everyone. The better choice depends on your curl type, how you wear your hair, and what you want out of the cut.
What a DevaCut is
A DevaCut (also called a Deva Cut or DevaCurl cut) is cut curl by curl on dry hair, in its natural state, not wet and pulled straight.
Cutting dry matters because curls shrink. An inch of wet hair can spring up to half that once it dries. Cutting dry lets your stylist see how each curl really falls.
A DevaCut aims for:
- Definition: each curl is cut on its own to bring out its pattern.
- Face framing: shaping around your face.
- Less weight: taking out the bulk that drags curls down.
- No triangle: no more flat on top and wide at the bottom.
It works best on loose to medium curls, for people who wear their hair curly most of the time. If you straighten often, a DevaCut can look uneven when it's blown out. That's normal, because it's cut for your curls. A DevaCut usually takes about an hour.
What a Rëzo cut is
The Rëzo cut was developed by Nubia Suarez. It's also cut dry, but it uses circular and triangular sections to build symmetry, balance and movement. Instead of focusing on each curl, it focuses on the overall shape and volume.
A Rëzo cut aims for:
- Volume and lift, especially at the root.
- A round, balanced shape instead of flat on top and heavy at the bottom.
- Keeping your length while still adding shape.
- Looking finished curly or straight.
Rëzo was first developed with tighter textures in mind, so it's a strong choice for coily and natural hair. Because of the detailed sectioning, a Rëzo cut can take up to three hours, and it usually costs more.
Side by side
| DevaCut | Rëzo cut | |
|---|---|---|
| Approach | Curl by curl, removes weight | Geometric sections, overall shape |
| Best for | Loose to medium curls worn curly | Wavy, curly and coily hair, especially tighter textures and people who switch between curly and straight |
| The triangle | Fixed with layers and weight removal | Avoided with a round, lifted shape |
| Length | Layering can take off more length | Keeps as much length as possible |
| Time in the chair | About an hour | Up to three hours |
| Worn straight | Can look uneven | Looks polished |
Which one should you book?
A DevaCut may suit you if you: have loose to medium curls, wear your hair curly almost all the time, want strong definition and face-framing layers, like shorter appointments, and don't need your cut to look even when it's straightened.
A Rëzo cut may suit you if you: have tight curls or coils, want to keep as much length as you can, switch between curly and straight, want the most volume and lift at the root, and don't mind spending more time (and money) on detailed shaping.
You don't have to pick one
Our Signature Curly Cut combines the two. We take the curl-by-curl precision and weight removal from the DevaCut and add the volume and shape of the Rëzo cut, then fit it to your curls and the way you actually wear them. Hope is the only Level 3 Deva certified stylist within 100 miles of Augusta, and she's Rëzo certified too, which is why we can offer both in one cut.
The stylist matters more than the method
A great DevaCut from an experienced curl stylist will beat a so-so Rëzo cut from someone who learned it on YouTube, and the reverse is true too. Whoever you book with, look at their work, read their reviews, and ask about their training with textured hair.
If you want help figuring out which cut fits your hair, start with our consultation, and we'll take it from there.
